Sometimes it can be hard to get kids (or even yourself…) to drink as much water as they need to. One of my friend’s kids complains that water is just too boring! Water doesn’t have to be boring, and you don’t have to spend money on fancy bottled or flavoured waters, either– it’s easy to make water delicious at home! Here are three of my favourite flavoured water recipes and I hope that you, your kids, and anyone else you give any of these flavoured waters to will love it as much as I do.
- Pineapple Mint water: In a jug or mason jar, add the leaves of one sprig of mint per cup of water. Use a spoon the rough the mint up a bit so that the leaves release their flavour; add in some pineapple chunks, and use your spoon to rough them up as well. Top everything up with some water, and let the flavours infuse for at least an hour in the fridge.
- Citrus water: slice an orange, lemon, and lime into rounds. Place a few slices of each into your container, and use a spoon to press on them just until they release some of their juices. Top everything up with water, and let it sit for at least an hour or two in the fridge.
- Strawberry Rosemary water: add sliced strawberries to a container, and use a spoon to slightly mash them. Add one sprig of rosemary per cup of water (rub the rosemary between your hands before putting it in the container). Top everything up with water, and let it sit for at least an hour.
All these recipes can be sweetened with sugar, honey, agave syrup, or no-calorie sweetener according to taste, but try to drink them without adding any sugar to see how you like it. Also, try to use ripe fruit in your water, because those are sweeter and juicier. All these recipes taste best after sitting for a few hours, and I’ve let them sit for 24 hours before and they tasted amazing!
