Delbert has been using Rainforest Journey, a fun online science program from EdTechLens as part of his 3rd grader’s school day. Science is one of his favorite subjects, but it is also one that he struggles with learning due to the amount of reading involved. I was thrilled to have the chance to have him review this program thanks to the Schoolhouse Review Crew.
About EdTechLens
EdTechLens is an online science program that gives children in grades K-5 the opportunity to learn about the Rainforest through beautiful images, videos, and text. This program has just hit the market not very long ago. EdTechLens only has the Rainforest Journey option available right now with plans of adding more in the future. This is not a full curriculum for Science, but more like an added bonus. This program is simple to use and pretty straight forward.
How We Used It
Delbert was excited about this program because the video showed him gorgeous pictures of animals. He thought it was going to be filled with videos. When he found out that it was more reading than watching videos, at first, he was worried about learning the material due to not being a strong reader. However, once he found out that he could have it read to him he became excited about the program.
Once Delbert logged into his account, he was taken to the spot where he left off. He was able to maneuver through the course without any assistance from me.
When he did his assessments, I did notice that he struggled with coming up with the right wording. As a result, I felt like he wasn’t truly learning anything. Yet, when I asked him questions about the material I did find that he gained some knowledge. (Unfortunately, he takes after me and doesn’t do so hot on tests unless they are multiple choice (even then I suffer.))
These assignments are quick and easy to complete. A child only needs to spend about 30 minutes on each lesson. Each lesson can be expanded by using the hands-on activities guides. Each unit has an activity for the students to do using the skills they’ve learned. I must admit the hands-on activities are pretty fun to do. (It may even be the best part of this program.)
Overall Review
EdTechLens is an online Science supplement worth considering when you’re teaching about the Rainforest. It’s simple to use and filled with beautiful images and videos to keep your children engaged in wanting to see and learn more. The current price of this program is reasonable at $50.00 for one student for a year access. (They do have other pricing points that are ideal if you have more than one child.)
