My childhood has been crossing my mind a lot lately. Maybe that’s because I’m dying to go see my first stepfather and all of his kids in Ohio and other people who are equally as special to me. Plus my kids keep asking me about all the special adventures I got to have as a kid. I love sharing these stories with them. However, I also want to share the experiences with them too.
I can remember as a kid going to Virginia Beach with my Dad and camping out in a tent with him. I loved that camp ground because it had a nice pool, a great arcade room, and plenty of trails to go and explore. Even back in the 80’s I was fascinated by all the different tents people had. Plus how we were “roughing it” when we went camping.
In our world today, camping has really gotten better. No longer does our camping experience really consist of just the basic camping supply list. We can now take more with us and even do more while we’re camping. We don’t have to be miserable while we’re out camping. We can enjoy many luxuries that we are used to having while at home to the point that our camping experiences actually feel like a home away from home.
Instead of having to sleep on the cold hard ground like I did, we can invest in some cots to sleep on. Plus I can still relax and enjoy the sunset views on Alps Mountaineering Lay-Z Lounger chairs.
We could enjoy family meals around the campfire using decent appliances like Ecozoom stoves found on The Clymb. Now that we have Pinterest we can find all kinds healthy meals to choose from for decent meals while camping. I never dreamed that cooking out would look as utterly appealing as it does when you look at all the ideas on Pinterest.
Considering I LOVE to go hiking and exploring new territories, it’s safe to say that I’d have to have comfortable shoes to wear. My kids love to run and enjoy the great outdoors. I personally love the slower pace of enjoying it all, but it’s time for me to get more in shape. The older my kids get the more I feel I have to get over my fear of looking awkward while running and “Just Do It” as Nike says.
Now I’m ready to go pack our bags for a camping trip. I’ve gotten plenty of cooler bags in the mail lately, it’s almost like someone is trying to tell me something.
What about you, what is your favorite new gadget or item that you take with you camping that wasn’t around back in the 80’s or before?
I am so with you. Camping has really come a long way since the 1980s-1990s. It is not really one thing that is better. Many equipment items (bed rolls, backpacks, tents etc) have gotten lighter and more comfortable. Food is tastier and easier to make. We have made wonderful memories as a family.
I love the advancements myself. I never really like roughing it if I could avoid it.
I love my gps lol
Fun article. Thank you 🙂
